Bust that rust

Rusty_chair_web__1.jpgAlthough fairly slow moving, rust can be incredibly damaging and destructive to metal surfaces around your home.

Whether it’s a metal fence, a trailer, a wheelbarrow, a lawnmower or even your garden tools, rust can quickly eat away at the metal. This can leave it looking unsightly or completely destroy the integrity of the metal, making it unusable or unsafe.

Wattyl has developed a painting system that allows you to tidy up those rusty areas and help to prevent further damage.
The Killrust system has been designed as an easy three-step process and is specifically formulated to rejuvenate, beautify and protect your metal surfaces.

To make the job even easier, the products in the Killrust system have been colour-coded, making it even easier for you to know which products you need and which applications they can be used in. All preparation products are coloured green, priming products are yellow and topcoat products are coded blue.

Preparation:
Killrust_Metal_prep__web_.jpgAs with all jobs, good preparation is the key to a good result; painting metal surfaces is no different.
All the preparatory products in the Killrust range are coloured green, so you’ll know exactly what products to look for when undertaking this stage of the job.
There are four separate products in the preparatory range:

  • Rust-Eeter – This converts rust to stop corrosion and provides a suitable surface for subsequent priming and painting. While it can be used on ferrous metal surfaces and wrought iron (perfect for those old-fashioned fences and gates), it isn’t for use on galvanised surfaces.
  • Cold Gavit – This is a zinc-rich gold galvanising primer designed for long-term extra heavy-duty corrosion protection and works by enclosing the metal in a film of zinc. It’s ideal for use on clean, rust-free steel in highly corrosive environment, such as those in coastal regions, making it perfect for steel handrails, balustrades and other structural steelwork.
  • Fishoilene – An anti-corrosive protective fluid for rusted steel where normal surface preparation can be difficult. Use this product in hard-to-reach areas like cracks, crevices, along pipes, around nuts and bolts and along welds and hinges.
  • Metal Prep – This kills and neutralises rust, exposing a clean surface for painting as well as improving adhesion and corrosion resistance. It’s designed to be used on mildly rusted steel and other ferrous metals, metal gates, railing and lattice work, although it’s not suitable for galvanised iron.

Priming:
Killrust_Can_yellow_primer_web_.jpgAfter the surface has been prepared, the next step is to prime the surface. Killrust primers contain rust-inhibiting pigments that chemically attack rust and create a protective barrier.
  • Metal Primer – Ideal for use on roofs, wrought iron railings, gutters, downpipes and general steelwork structures. Metal Primer is a high-performance, anti-corrosive primer that forms a tough and flexible coating to resist corrosion, even in harsh environments.
  • Super Etch Primer – This fast-drying, anti-corrosive primer provides excellent adhesion to aluminium, brass, copper, stainless steel, zinc and lead surfaces, making it perfect for aluminium windows, doors, gutters, fences, gates, railing and downpipes.
  • Galvanised Iron Primer – An oil-based corrosion-inhibiting primer that provides protection against white rust and promotes adhesion of subsequent coats. Great for new and weathered galvanised iron and Zincalume.

Topcoat:
Killrust_can2_blue_topcoat__web_.jpgThe final stage in the job, but one that requires careful choice between two products:
  • Superior Protection Epoxy Enamel – With its advanced anti-corrosive epoxy formula, it provides excellent durability and maximum metal protection in an attractive gloss finish. It can be applied directly to new and lightly rusted steel and wrought iron surfaces without priming and can also be used on metal fences, gutters, gates, railings, downpipes and other general metal coating applications. It comes in a range of 40 different colours, from white to black and everything in between.
  • Hammer Finish – Offering a decorative coating resembling hammered sheet metal, this product can camouflage imperfect surfaces and hide unsightly dents, scratches and joints. It’s ideal for rough surfaces, weld joints or equipment already coated in a similar ‘hammer’ finish. This comes in four colour options and is only available in an aerosol pack.
To simplify the process, Wattyl has created the Killrust System Guide, which will show you exactly which product to use for your individual project. Check in-store at Mitre 10  to view a copy.
